Why Your Bloodwork Looks "Normal" But You Still Feel Off
You got your labs back. Your doctor said everything looks normal. So why do you still feel exhausted, foggy, and not quite like yourself?
If this sounds familiar, you are not imagining things. And you are not alone.
This is one of the most common conversations I have with new patients at Solutions Functional Medicine Centre, and it is one of the most important ones.
The Difference Between "Normal" and Optimal
Standard lab ranges are built around a broad population average. They are designed to catch disease, not to identify the early signs that something is trending in the wrong direction.
In other words, "normal" on a conventional lab report means you are not sick enough to be flagged. It does not mean your body is functioning at its best.
Functional medicine uses a much narrower set of optimal ranges- the ranges where the body tends to actually thrive, not just survive. When we look at your labs through that lens, we often find patterns that explain exactly why you feel the way you do, even when everything appears fine on paper.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Take blood sugar as an example. A fasting glucose of 99 mg/dL falls within the standard "normal" range. But from a functional medicine perspective, that number is trending toward a pattern we want to address before it becomes a problem. Paired with other markers like fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1C, or triglycerides, it can paint a very different picture than a single normal result.
The same is true for thyroid panels, iron studies, vitamin D, B12, and many other common markers. A result that sits within range is not always a result that tells the full story.
Why This Matters
When the warning signs are missed or dismissed, the underlying patterns keep progressing quietly. What starts as fatigue and brain fog can eventually show up as a diagnosable condition years down the road.
Catching those patterns early, before they become a diagnosis, is one of the most powerful things functional medicine has to offer.
What You Can Do
If you have been told your labs are normal but something still feels off, trust that instinct. Your body is communicating something worth paying attention to.
A Discovery Consult is a great place to start. We will take a closer look at your existing labs through a functional lens and talk through what might actually be driving how you feel.
You deserve more than "normal." You deserve to feel well.
